Ministry of Economic Development of Ukraine developed a procedure for labeling foods with respect to their content of GMOs

The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine proposes to approve the procedure for labeling of foods with respect to their content of GMOs.

The corresponding draft resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine “On approval of the labeling (marking) food in their content of genetically modified organisms” published on the official site Ministry of Economic Development 25 June 2012 d.

As noted in the accompanying documents to the draft resolution, drafted to ensure the implementation of the Law of Ukraine 17.12.2009 №1778 VI “On Amendments to the Law of Ukraine “On the safety and quality of food “with respect to informing citizens about the presence of GMOs in foods” and by 17.12.2009 №1779 VI “On Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of Ukraine regarding the provision of information about the content of GMOs in products”.

The practical significance of the project lies in the implementation of a regulatory legal act in Ukraine, regulating the food labels, sold in the consumer market of Ukraine, the presence or absence of GMOs in them.

Besides, the main objectives of the development of the project is to ensure that Article. 50 Constitution of Ukraine concerning the guarantee to every citizen of Ukraine the right to free access to information about the quality of food, the establishment of uniform rules and procedures for labeling by manufacturers and suppliers of foodstuffs and food raw materials.

The document also proposes to invalidate the resolutions of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine dated 13 May 2009 d. №468 “On approval of the labeling of food products, containing genetically modified organisms or produced using them and introduced into circulation” (Official Bulletin of Ukraine, 2009 d. , № 37, Article. 1240) and by 1 July 2009 d. № 661 “On Amendments to the Decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine 13 May 2009 d. №468” (Official Bulletin of Ukraine, 2009 city, № 50, Article. 1688 ).
