This year on January 4 the President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, signed the Law "On Information for Consumers on Food Products", which was approved by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on 6 December 2018 year (registration number of the bill 8450) effective the day after its publication, and entered into force after 6 months after publication.
The law was developed in accordance with the Comprehensive Implementation Strategy of Chapter IV "Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU", approved by the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine 24 February 2016 y. № 228-p.
The purpose of this document is to bring Ukrainian legislation in line with the provisions of EU Regulation No. 1169/2011 from 25 October 2011 y. on the provision of food information to consumers.
The law establishes general principles for the provision of food information, and information requirements for consumers, in particular regarding the labeling of food products, as well as the obligations of food business operators to bring this information to other food business operators and consumers
This legal act establishes, that information on the food product must be accurate, reliable and understandable to the consumer and should not mislead him as to the characteristics of the food product, its properties, structure, number, minimum shelf life date or "best before", country of origin or place of origin, mode of production (production).
In parallel, it is prohibited to attribute to a food product the properties or consequences of consumption, assumption by the appearance of a product, description or graphic representation of the presence of a component or ingredient in a food product, if in fact a component or ingredient, that is usually present or used in a given food product, is replaced by another component or ingredient.
